Choosing the Right Digital Hearing Aid For Yourself
September 19th, 2009
People of all ages often fail to have their hearing tested, even if they suspect they may be losing their hearing, because of their reluctance to wear a hearing aid. Many still have the impression that digital hearing aids are large and unsightly, when in fact, there are many different styles to fit different needs. Some hearing aids that rest partially or completely in the ear canal are very discreet, while providing effective relief. These small hearing aids are easy to use with a telephone, and typically pick up little or no wind noise. These models are especially popular with younger people and professionals. Although these in-the-canal models are inconspicuous, they are often less effective for more severe hearing loss.
A half or full shell hearing aid is bigger than the in-the-canal types, and is custom molded to fit in the outer ear. Although these models are more visible, they are more effective for people with moderate to severe hearing loss. Because of their larger size, the full- and half-shell models are available with features like volume control and directional microphones. A behind-the-ear hearing aid is the most visible, but also the most effective in treating all types of hearing loss, from mild to severe. This style has two components: one part hooks over the top of the ear and rests behind the ear. It captures and amplifies sound and carries it to a molded part that rests in the outer ear. No one should suffer from hearing loss when there are so many viable options available. Any hearing aid specialist or audiologist can determine the right hearing aid for each individual.
