Lives Saved by Defibrillators Available on Planes and in Schools

November 11th, 2009

Countless lives have been saved by the availability of defibrillators on planes and in public schools.  Flight attendants and school personnel have been trained to use the portable defibrillator in case of an emergency mid-flight, during classes, or at school sporting events.  We have all seen movies where someone is suffering a heart attack and an actor calls, “Is there a doctor in the house?”.  With trained personnel and a defibrillator on scene, the services of a doctor are not always necessary.  Many young lives have been lost on practice fields and during athletic contests due to undetected heart ailments.  Possibly some of them could have been saved if a defibrillator had been available.  The same applies for passengers taking ill hundreds of miles from the nearest airport with no medical assistance on board.  Today we can fly and send our children to school with the confidence that a defibrillator is present if a medical crisis occurs.
