Managing Urinary Problems with a Catheter

May 19th, 2009

In order to manage urinary problems in women who may also have other medical conditions, female catheters are used. The intermittent catheters are used for women who have a spinal cord injury or have problems with urinary retention. The indwelling urethral catheter is inserted into the urethra in order to allow the bladder to drain. Men can also use this type of catheter to control incontinence or urinary retention when other methods such as surgery and medications are not successful. these are also appropriate for terminally ill patients. People who are home bound and may not have family or caregiver assistance for a period of time may also use this type.
