Sunglasses Are No Longer Just a Fashion Accessory

June 20th, 2009

With the growing concern over the thinning of the earth’s atmosphere and exposure to harmful UV rays, we need to protect our skin and eyes from the sun.  In the past, a sun tan was considered part of our summer wardrobe and “laying out” in the backyard or at the beach was a popular past time for young girls.  These same young girls are now middle-aged and paying the price for exposing their skin to too much sun with wrinkles and skin cancer.  We now know to limit our time in the sun and always protect our skin with sunblock, but we tend to forget about the damage done to our eyes by UV rays.  Sunglasses are usually thought of as a fashion accessory, but they are our most important defense for our eyes.  When purchasing sunglasses, check the type and strength of tint along with their size.  Most sunglasses now have a tag attached that tells if they protect against UV rays.  Sunglasses protect the skin around the eyes, so the larger the lenses the more protection there is for your face.  Take these simple steps when exposed to the sun to protect your skin, eyes, and health.
