Get everything in writing before the job begins

One thing to remember about hiring a contractor to do a job is; do not pay upfront for the whole job. Some might take advantage of elderly or people who are naive when hiring others. When they come to do your kitchen renovation estimate make it clear you will be paying one third at the start of the job, one third in the middle of the job, and the last third when the job is completed and not before. Get this in writing, or you might end up like my friend. She still has a person who never got a permit, never finished the job, and is still putting around her house a year later. She has furniture in storage and this delay has cost her thousands she did not expect to pay.
