What is the Best Way to Collect Rain Water?

We are trying to figure out the most environmentally friendly way to keep our yard looking nice. We want to plant native plants to take up a bunch of the space so we won’t need to water so much, but we would also like to be able to collect rain water so that when we do have to water the garden or the yard it won’t be so bad for the environment or so costly for us. Water is pretty expensive here it seems, and we tend to need a pretty large amount just for our indoor needs, not even counting the outdoors.
