August 2nd, 2009

We do know for certain that Red Velvet Cake recipe, this sweet, rich layered cake with a very distinctive red color with white icing or frosting, originated in the late 1900s, somewhere in America. Most food historians agree that, like many layer cakes, it comes from the southern United States – some people even call it the “the Chocolate Cake of the South.” Although the red velvet cake recipe is not included in every cookbook about Southern food, it is certainly most popular in the south and is a favorite dessert cakes in New Orleans. Red Velvet Cake rose in popularity in the 1950’s and 1960’s and again fifty years later, when Oprah introduces the cake in her show.
