My Son is a Pirate and My Daughter Is a Princess

April 8th, 2009

It occurs to me that fairy tales do more than just entertain us. They are a simple way of explaining complicated people.  Don’t we all know a prince, princess, troll, and pirate?  Children’s stories teach us that there all kinds of people and what will happen if we act like them. I watch my adventurous son dressed for Halloween in his Pirate fancy dress or my daughter in her princess costume and I know why they chose them.  I realize that they are already beginning to decide the kind of people they will be, just like two of their fairy tale characters come to life.
