New Documentary Film Recalls That Night in Turin

June 21st, 2010

‘Escape to Victory’, ‘Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait’, ‘Fever Pitch’ and ‘Goal!’, there have been loads of great films with football themes, and a recently released documentary by James Erskine about England’s 1990 World Cup campaign looks set to add to this list. The film focuses on the way in which the national mood was transformed over the course of a few weeks, and England’s charismatic and fondly-remembered manager Bobby Robson emerges as its hero.  Few of those who watched England’s dramatic semi-final against West Germany can forget the unbearably sad scenes when the young and super-talented Paul Gascoigne broke down in tears after receiving yellow card that would have ruled him out of the final.
