Starting On A Medical Coding Career

June 13th, 2009

Each medical procedure and patient encounter has a number associated with it and it corresponds to another code for a diagnosis. This ensures that insurance companies reimburse physicians and other medical practices correctly. It also helps prevent fraudulent medical claims or errors in payment. It is expected that medical coding careers will continue to grow with the aging US population and the need for specialized understanding of billing procedures. In addition, codes change yearly and there is an expected change to the entire coding procedure that will occur in the next few years. Doctors and hospitals do not have the time to train everyone on this information and look to coders to already have this knowledge.
