Can Link Popularity Building Be Automated?

I have done a lot of research about the importance of link popularity building to a websites ranking and visibility in the search engines and realized that I was lacking in that department.  I was able to find a guide that gave some very useful strategies for link building.  I have started implementing some of the strategies outlined in the book, but am now researching options that may be available to automate some of the work and get more links more quickly.  I still ant them to look natural, the way the search engines ike them, but I want to get them more quickly.
