Opinion On “Tammie Harrison: My Life as a Chinese Dating”
February 20th, 2012
I’m struck by how many commenters in these pages were offended by this article.
Taking up your theme of relations between Chinese and fashion tips for girlseigners, maybe I can offend them some more.
A huge demographic problem awaits young Chinese males. The one child policy followed for the last couple of decades has meant in practice that Chinese parents have preferred to have boy children rather than girls. (The same has been happening in India, but for different reasons.)
The relative lack of marriageable age girls will almost certainly lead young Chinese men to look overseas to foreign Chinese communities – and to young foreign women – for partners.
The dating game is only the beginning of the commercial opportunity in social media and elsewhere to re-balance supply and demand. Perhaps there is a reason to publish this in the Journal after all.
